What exactly is a “hardscape”
google defines a hardscape as, “the man-made features used in landscape architecture, e.g. paths or walls, as contrasted with vegetation.”
Terms you’ll want to know
Interlocking concrete paver
Paving stones or pavers, manufactured from concrete varying in price, style, size, color, and texture. Though there’s much variation, installation practices are fairly standard. Over the years paver technology has improved greatly. Today pavers, when installed properly, can last a lifetime.
Segmental Retaining wall
Segmental retaining wall systems are modular concrete block walls, similar to pavers the options vary greatly and can also last the test of time. Retaining wall blocks can also be utilized to construct pillars, steps, and seat walls.
Inlay
An inlay is constructed within a paved surface or wall utilizing a contrasting colored paver or block, often following a perimeter or to highlight an inbound structure. Inlay pieces installed in a linear fashion are referred to as a sailor course, and pieces laid in a horizontal to each other are referred to as a sailor course.
Banding
similar to an inlay, A band uses contrasting colors to ad aesthetic value, only laid on the perimeter of an paved area.
Natural stone
There are hundreds of options when it comes to natural stone. Each style of stone originates at a different quarry and can be processed in many styles; flagstone, wall stone, cut stone, and many in between. We will go over a few of our favorite natural stone styles below.
Bluestone
Bluestone is a sedimentary rock, often seen “regular” cut in square and rectangles of varying sizes. Bluestone can also be purchased in “irregular” shapes with jagged edges that a mason can carefully fitt together to create a more natural appeal.
cobblestone
Cobblestones are made by splitting granite into rectangles, granite is an igneous rock, an extremely dense rock that has been used in construction since ancient times. Though cobblestones come split in a number of sizes the most common size is 4”x7”x10”most refer to this size as “jumbo”.
granite step
Granite steps are one of our favorite features to ad in our designs. At 7” in height,12-14” deep, and available in various widths these steps are a one stop shop, stack to create a staircase or leave it solo for A great single step. Granite steps are cut top and bottom to create a uniform step, and split on the front and sides to retain the beautiful natural look.
Wall stone
Wall stone can be just about any type of stone, mostly what stone is locally quarried is popular. Wall stone is typically an assortment of random chunks that a mason will split and shape in order to construct a retaining wall or vertical feature to the desired style. Natural stone walls can be constructed utilizing different practices; drystack, interior mortared, or wet laid. Natural retaining walls are also commonly constructed with flagstone and square and rec split stone.
